Boone is located in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and is considered one of the most scenic places in America.   The Cherokee named the area Watauga which means "whispering waters" or "beautiful waters". Some claim the meaning to be "land of the beyond". Boone, population 26,000, was recently listed in two editions of "The 100 Best Small Towns in America" . The 1995 edition of "Where to Retire" listed Boone as a prime retirement spot, and the 1998 edition of "Blue Country Magazine" chose the town as a Platinum winner of Best Mountain Town. At an elevation of 3400 feet, Boone's climate is temperate, with an average temperature of 69 degrees, 53 inches of rainfall, and 36 inches of snow per year. This mountain Eden is only an hour from I-77, I-81 AND I-40, with access to Boone through highways 321, 421, and 221.  
         
 

Watauga County schools provide excellent education to over 3,000 students. Watauga High School continues to produce SAT scores higher than national average s and remains a leader in the state. Heavenly Mountain is home to the Heavenly Mountain Ideal Girls School, a private school for girls, grades 7 through 12. Appalachian State University serves as the academic hub of Boone, with a student population of around 12,000. "U.S. News & World Reports" ranked ASU in the top 15 of Southern Universities for 1999.

The inspirational beauty continually attracts artists and musicians to this area. Concerts of all kinds abound from the auditoriums to the streets! Visitors enjoy a multi-faceted array of cultural events sponsored by the University, many of which are part of the Appalachian Summer Festival. There are wonderful resorts in the area, several health clubs, 3 health food stores, a spa, a tennis and racquetball club, 4 ski hills, (one right in Boone!), gorgeous golf courses, a driving range, and a practice climbing post in the center of town.
